Biking to Work, 2007

It became quickly apparent that taking the bus to my job in San Domenico di Fiesole, from our new home on the other side of the Arno River, would mean spending up to 2 hours a day on the bus. From where we live, I must take 2 buses, one of which only comes every 20 minutes. And since we only have one car, and the kids' school is not on any bus line, whomever takes kids to school gets the car, and that is usually Eric.

In early September our shipment of stuff arrived from Madison, including our bicycles. I recall now how silly I felt a couple of years ago, buying a bike that had a shock absorber on the seat post and on the front fork. But boy, am I digging that now, what with all the cobble stones I have been riding over for the past 3 weeks as I commute to and from work.

This morning I brought the camera along on the commute. On a typical day it takes 30 minutes from door to door (going) and 25 minutes for the return trip. You will see that it is a very different commute from the walk I would take from our house in Fiesole (see earlier post from 2006 for photos).

I have put the photos into our Picasa album - click on photo below. I have also used the MAP feature to place each photo along the route.
